Discover WITOIL

WITOIL (Where Is The Oil) is a service provided to predict the transport and transformation of actual or hypothetical oil spills in the Mediterranean Sea.

Prediction is simulated by the oil spill model MEDSLIK-II as a freely available community model (http://gnoo.bo.ingv.it/MEDSLIKII). More information about the oil spill model MEDSLIK-II can be found in the following publications:

As an interactive system WITOIL requires the input of data about atmospheric winds, sea surface temperatures, and sea currents. The atmospheric wind data is provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analyses, at 0.25° horizontal and 6-h temporal resolution. The ocean current data is provided by hourly forecast fields produced by the Mediterranean Forecasting System (MFS) at 1/16° × 1/16° horizontal resolution.

WITOIL provides users with the spatial-temporal distributions of oil concentration at the sea surface and coastline, and the components of oil mass balance. WITOIL output consists of graphics and animations available through web browser.

WITOIL is a product of the TESSA project, created by:

  • Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC) is responsible for the research activity, the computation of the oil trajectory and oil mass balance components and dissemination of the ocean model products
  • Links S.p.A., responsible for the deployment of the DSS on the web
  • Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino e Costiero (CNR-IAMC) is responsible for the development and operational use of forecast systems for the Strait of Sicily and the Tyrrhenian Sea
